Now is the time to lean on the relationships you\u2019ve built over time with customers. The entire world is suffering physically and economically, so be honest and transparent with your customers and start to build (or reinforce) the foundation of your relationship with them. Remind them that there\u2019s a face behind your business and that you understand what they might be going through.<\/p>\n<p>Send emails and create social content to engage your community, encourage them in their struggles and it\u2019s okay to mention to them how much of an effect this pandemic has on your business. It may be helpful to take a position of \u201cLet\u2019s rally together\u201d as opposed to a \u201cWoe is me\u201d approach to help inspire people.<\/p>\n<p>Sift through your customer data and segment your customer lists to create more personalized messaging. For example, find your VIPs\u2014those who\u2019ve spent the most or have the longest customer tenure\u2014and offer them special discounts to thank them and help them during what could be a tough time for them as well. Ask for feedback, or ask if they\u2019d be interested in a loyalty program, and put the focus on how much you appreciate them.<\/p>\n<p>Though they may no longer be considered a \u201csmall business,\u201d take a look at how Chubbies communicated what\u2019s happening, how they\u2019re handling it, and what they\u2019re offering to customers. This way you&#8217;re still getting revenue coming in during a difficult time and customers still eventually get a benefit of redeeming the order once this is all over with. They get to support a company they love, and you&#8217;ll still be around when this whole thing blows over.<\/p>\n<h2>Work on a fulfillment contingency plan<\/h2>\n<p>Amazon made a major change recently, preventing sellers from being able to send any inventory that doesn\u2019t fall into the category of \u201cnecessities\u201d for Fulfillment By Amazon. This left sellers who depended on Amazon to fulfill part or all of their orders puzzled as to what to do next.<\/p>\n<p>Without much guidance, many sellers who depended on a vast fulfillment network either had to stop selling products or fulfill orders themselves. This situation is a perfect example of the fragility of \u201cselling on rented land.\u201d Amazon has a business to run, and sometimes de-prioritizing other sellers\u2019 products is just part of that process.<\/p>\n<p>Sellers on Amazon, or any marketplace, need to make sure they have a multichannel approach to selling online. While it might be easier to let Amazon do the picking and packing, a fallback plan with the ability to sell on another marketplace, or better yet your own website property, gives you the ability to be agile at a time like this.
